DESCRIPTION:

A tribute of sorts - The original map is from the game UNREAL and the author
was Shane Caudle of Epic Games.

"The Gateway" was not a level in the regular game, but rather this extra map
provided by Epic for (iirc) modding by server admins (?) Unreal teleporters
could actually load other maps (via url) and there were eight un-linked
teleporters in the level so this is the likely scenario (I think i read that
at Beyond Unreal or somewhere).

Any how, when I first played Unreal (long long ago) and afterwards loaded the
editor (UED1, lol) I remember when I first discovered "The Gateway" :
"OMFG a secret space station - frikken cool!" That was my first thought after
picking my jaw up of the floor. The concept and construction was way beyond me
back then (but not now, heh ;)

I guess (originally) it was supposed to represent an earth ship (part of a fleet)
in orbit above NaPali, and the player would wander around to the various "portals"
into which he/she would enter one to join a Unreal DM match.

Well, the for this CTF, I re0imagined the scene is more of the earth fleet
stationed inside a nebula (or are they hiding from the skaarj ;) Nearby there's
a few planets in a binary star system (which explains the sunlight pouring
through those big windows in each base, lol... anyways, you'll see what i mean
when you load the map :)

---

Fast forward to recent times - the last months of 2012 saw the UT99.Org XMAS
mapping contest where mappers were supposed to use Epic levels and themes in
their contest maps and "gateways" was one map I fiddled with. I did run over
it quickly with a boatload of tech textures and mashed the thing into a CTF
map of sorts to test the concept and experiment a bit with tech theme ideas.

I guess I wasn't in the mood for techy space ship mapping (I always do those, lol)
so I parked the map and built DM-XC-EpicTown instead - a giant urban mashup map of
various Epic levels - but that's another map and another story.

Following that XMAS contest (early in 2013) Swanky started up a "Reminincence mappack".
This was to be a FoT type of mappack planned for release in May 2013. There were to be
several contibutors but sadly interest fizzled out and so he cancelled the pack during
April. I had been working on a troublesome map (Fallen Angel, what else) for that pack
but had little time to devote to the task. Well now i can do some mapping and I find
I'm not in the mood to fight with Fallen Angel, so this one got pulled off the shelf
and voila :)

Okay, it ain't a great CTF map, but it does work, quirks and all. More of a novelty map
I'd say. Best played with teams of 5 masterful bots (or better). You can load up teams
of 8 if you like a lot spam (there are several choke-points). Of course humans would
approach this sort of map more creatively that BOTs, although I don't expect it'll
get played online much, if at all, oh well.

Features UTR XPickups from UT99.org :)

Hope you enjoy this map!

hmm, plenty for 8 - 12...

There are 4 X-Wildcard bases which spawns random goodies.
Each is a bit out of the way, so better hope the trip is worth it, heh ;)

--------------------------------------------------------------
 Construction
--------------------------------------------------------------
Base: Original "Gateway" Map from UNREAL by Shane Caudle. Dupped and flipped to
form two bases, added a middle area and connecting hallways with lifts, etc.
Tried to preserve as much of the original BSP as possible but invariably had
to delete problematic brushes and adjust geometry that did not work for one
reason or another (lol. lots of HOMs, brushclip crashes, etc), but eventually
arrived at a stable build. Still a few little hommies around and other funk
but no show-stoppers ;)

NOTE: The gateways (dispatched movers) were all functional at some point but
i decided in the end to just to leave them all open so the bots could use the
teleporters without any fuss. The actors (triggers, dispatchers) are all still in
there but would need have the event names added back in the triggers and the movers
reset to key0 to be operational again. I could see someone may want to make a DM
map (or whatever) out of this CTF and have operating gateways.

The map started at around 600 brushes and ended up almost 1500 brushes.
All lighting was completely redone, and the skybox turned out well...

Build Time: about 25 or 30 hours altogether, including playtesting.

Editor(s) Used: UnrealEd2, PhotoShop.
